Tottori: Naturally ocurring sand dunes

Sep 5, 2022

The geographer in me is always game to check out interesting natural formations, so when we realised there was sand dunes near where we were staying, we had to take a look. We got there pretty late in the evening but that only gave us a fantastic sunset.

(Accidentally capturing someone's jumpshot)

The sand dunes were fascinating and it's even more impressive that they were naturally formed. Apparently they were shaped over 100,000 years. The local community has some issues with the sand enroaching on urban space, so they have to strike a balance between preserving this formation and keeping it in check.

Chasing the Perfect View

It's quite a small gazetted area and you can pretty much see most of the dunes from the start. The large oasis in the middle is mesmerising, with a perfect reflection of the sky.

They offer camel rides as well. You can easily walk to the top of the ridge nearer to the coastline, but beware of the steep slopes on the other side. I would not recommend travelling down to the coastline as it would be a terrible climb back up.

They have a visitor center where you can get information and maps.
