The best udon in Osaka: Agetate-udon Tsukirou

Hidden gem
When finding good places to eat, I tend to steer clear of those super touristy restaurants. First because I don't like the crowds, and second, because I prefer more rustic and local eating places.
I stumbled upon this place while looking up google maps as we drove our rented car from Kansai Airport, on the way to Osaka city center. It seemed to tick all the boxes for me so we took the next highway exit to get here.

It was a short wait of about 10 mins as there were people waiting outside. You have to put your name on the list in front of the restaurant which is pretty common in Japan. There were quite a few locals but we did spot a couple of tourists as well.

Chris got the curry udon and we were kind of blown away by it. The curry was piping hot and had great flavor. The tempura-fried onsen egg in the center was a real treat; something we personally don't see often. The curry was delicious and the spice level was perfect. You can order a side of rice as well which pairs well with the food.

I went with the plain udon with a side of chicken karage. The fried chicken was a standout: soft on the inside and I loved the radish bits fried on the outside. The plain udon had a great flavor as well. Of course, it all looks pretty plain, but you can tell that this shop puts a ton of effort into their food.
This was the first restaurant we visited on the trip, but it was so good that on the way back to the airport on our last day, we had to have it one more time. Sure enough, we had an amazing meal again and we realised this time that they have English menus!

I write about a lot of udon on this site but this might actually be the top. They have another signature dish which is their bukkake style udon (sauce poured over). Unfortunately I didn't try it this trip but I'll have my revenge some day.
