Nijo Castle

Kyoto's big castle

I guess one of the touristy spots that we had to visit was the great Nijo castle. I had thought that it was a former residence of the Emperor of Japan but actually it was built for the shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle is impressive and features a number of original buildings you can visit. At the far corner of the castle, you can also visit one of the towers which offers stunning views of Kyoto.

(The view from the innermost tower)

The moat is pretty and you can see the mountains in the distance, classic Japanese landscape!

We paid 800 yen per ticket for entry into Nijo Castle, not expensive at all!
